Emily Parsons, welcome to the AHPCA Board of Directors! Emily is a paramedic employed with Alberta Health Services (AHS) Emergency Medical Services (EMS). She currently works with fire departments across Alberta that provide medical first response within their communities. Emily also looks after Alberta’s provincial Automated External Defibrillator (AED) registry called Heart Safe Community. She loves working with such a diverse group of Albertans province-wide.
Emily became interested in palliative care after years of working as a paramedic in rural Alberta and realizing the lack of awareness and resources that are available to palliative patients. A few years ago, the issue really hit home when three people close to Emily died after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. Emily’s personal experience has prompted her to become an advocate for palliative care awareness. Everything circles back to Emily’s desire to help people, coupled with the awareness that each person navigating the healthcare system has unique needs.
On her rare day off, Emily makes sure to disconnect from work, news, social media and anything else that could be stressful. She is a big gardener and in the summer, gardening takes up most of her free time. At the moment, Emily’s motto is “Be Kind”.
