Hospice Society of Camrose and District – Volunteer Training
April 30, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Being with Dying – Volunteer Training Program
The Hospice Society of Camrose and District offers a comprehensive hospice training program over three weekends. Presented by a team of educators, counsellors, and nurses from the Camrose community, the course provides participants with a deeper understanding of how to face the dying process oneself and how to accompany others. Our training approaches hospice work by emphasizing one’s own inner peace as the basis for being with another. In the training, caregivers explore their own relationship to loss and suffering and, through engaging their own process, are more able to offer a presence of quietude and grace. As volunteers will be working with people from all faith traditions, an openness and acceptance of other beliefs is integral to our work. It is of equal value that volunteers be grounded in and develop their own spiritual practice.
Physical Care & the Value of Silence: Completing a vision for holistic care
“Physical Care and the Value of Silence” has two main components. The first element provides a basic understanding of the physical and clinical dimensions of the dying process. The second part reflects on on death as a natural part of life. By coming to peace with this basic truth, we can offer a calm and comforting presence to others. This initial weekend also considers how much we can give by simply being present to others. Participants will learn how to listen in a nonjudgmental way that acknowledges the wisdom of those who are dying.
Sessions are Fridays (7–9pm) and Saturdays (9–4pm). Except for the introduction, Friday evening sessions are optional and will emphasize the contemplative elements of hospice care. Those who wish to become volunteer caregivers will complete all sessions.
