Substance Misuse Among Older Adults: An Overview of Psychosocial Interventions to Help Your Clients

Course Objectives: Using case based learning you will

Become familiar with differential approaches to Substance Use
Develop skills to recognize types of Substance Use Disorders in older adults
Be able to use geriatric, addiction-specific screening and assessment tools

Instructor: Marilyn White-Campbell, B.A., Dip. Grt

Marilyn is a clinical geriatric addiction consultant and a Canadian Pioneer in the field of addictions treatment for
older adults. She is currently on Secondment to St Josephs Health Center Guelph with the Community Responsive
Behavioural Supports Team to build capacity in geriatric addictions in collaboration with COPA, CMHA Specialized
Geriatric Services and SJHC Guelph. Marilyn is the provincial lead and Co Chair of the Older Adult Substance Use
Collaborative with BSO BrainXChange. She is Co-author of Addictions Treatment for Older Adults; she has presented
nationally and internationally on the treatment of older adults with substance use disorders. She is the recipient of
the Ontario Psychogeriatric Award of Excellence in 2011, nominated for the Service Awards for Geriatric Excellence
( SAGE) in the category of Executive Senior Leadership Achievement in 2015 and for Team excellence in 2016.
Marilyn is the recipient inaugural 2018 CAGP/CCSMH Seniors’ Mental Health Outstanding Care & Integrative
Practice Award She is the founder of the COPA College © program, a group based model of care and co-author of
two physician pocket guides for the treatment of substance use disorders in the elderly. Marilyn is currently a co
investigator for the Canadian Coalition for Seniors Mental Health National Clinical Best Practice Guidelines for
Substance Use Disorders in Older Adults and is co chair of the Alcohol working group.
