Roadshow – Grief Literacy: Building on the Fundamentals

Broaden your understanding of grief as it relates to death and non-death related loss, including anticipatory and disenfranchised grief.

Grief is a total human experience. This presentation will provide a comprehensive introduction to grief and loss including a broadening of understanding of how we learn about dying, death loss and bereavement. This presentation will focus on grief as it relates to death but will also include non-death related loss and alongside information about anticipatory grief and disenfranchised grief.


Kathy Kortes-Miller, MSW, PhD has a passion for palliative care and improving end of life care for all. She is an associate professor at the School of Social Work and the Director of the Centre for Education and Research on Aging and Health (CERAH) at Lakehead University. Her research is interdisciplinary and collaborative, contributing to a broad range of fields of study including: social work, thanatology, palliative care, interprofessional education, gerontology and LGBTQ+. She was a long-standing member of the board of directors for Hospice Northwest and in March 2018 published the book “Talking About Death Won’t Kill You” with ECW Press.
