Facilitator: Trish Talarico – Director, Hospice Care and Clinical Practice, Pilgrims Hospice Society

Learning Objectives for Modules 6 & 7 from the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association:

  1. Understand the most common life-limiting illnesses, their treatments and side effects.
  2. Understand the care needs of people with those illnesses.
  3. Understand the volunteer’s role in providing physical care and pain and symptom management, and how to provide that care.
  4. Recognize when a person is experiencing pain and appropriate comfort measures.
  5. Recognize the signs of death and care needs when the end is near.
  6. Understand infection control policies and know which practices to use.
  7. Understand the unique challenges of caring for a dying person at home or in a hospice.
  8. Understand the role of food in the life of a dying person and family, and how food affects the quality of hospice palliative care.
  9. Understand the causes of appetite loss as well as strategies to help people increase their intake of food.
  10. Learn about body mechanics.
  11. Learn basic safety precautions.
