This webinar will examine the palliative approach for patients with Renal Failure. The objectives for the webinar are:
1. Highlight the need for integrating quality palliative care for patients with advanced kidney disease. I will focus primarily on:
a. Estimating life expectancy
b. Decision-making re: conservative kidney management (CKM), starting and withdrawing dialysis
c. Symptom burden
2. Describe a framework for kidney palliative care
3. Highlight some opportunities for integrating kidney palliative care
Presented by Sara Davison
Sara Davison is a Professor, bioethicist and health outcomes researcher in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta. She is a nephrologist with the Northern Alberta Renal Program and heads Alberta’s Provincial Kidney Palliative Care Initiative. She is recognized internationally as a leader in kidney palliative care; acts as a consultant for establishing kidney palliative care programs; and co-Chairs the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) palliative care group with the aim of developing international guidelines for kidney palliative care. Her program of research focuses on the delivery of quality palliative care for patients with advanced kidney failure.
