Kids Grieve Too

Presenter: Andrea Warnick

Learn how to support children who are grieving the dying or death of someone they care about.

Monday November 15, 2021

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. MT

About the Event: The dying and death of a significant person represents one of the most powerful disruptions in all aspects of a child or youth’s emotional existence. Yet few people receive formal training on how to support children and youth who are grieving the dying or death of someone they care about. This webinar will identify common barriers to supporting children and youth who are grieving as well highlight innovative and practical strategies that can be used in a variety of settings to help children and youth integrate the illness or death into their lives in a healthy way. It will include stories and important messages from children, youth and their families that illustrate “best practice” guidelines for supporting the wellbeing of children who are grieving.

Andrea Warnick is a Registered Nurse and Registered Psychotherapist whose passion lies in helping individuals, families and communities support people of all ages who are grieving an illness or death in their lives. With years of nursing and counselling experience both in Canada and abroad and a Masters degree in Thanatology (the study of dying and death) Andrea brings to her work a rare mixture of medical and psychosocial expertise. Andrea developed and teaches the 5 Day Certificate Program in Children’s Grief and Bereavement at SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health. She also is the host of KidsGrief Q&A, a free monthly forum through Canadian Virtual Hospice where she responds to questions from families and professionals about supporting grieving children and youth. Andrea lives in Guelph Ontario, from where she runs Andrea Warnick Consulting, a group practice of 25 therapists who provide grief counselling across Ontario and grief education across Canada.

Finding Meaning in the Mess of Grief

Presenters: Dr. Jody Carrington and Jessica Janzen

Grief is one of the messiest, painful, most unpredictable experiences for those of us left behind after a loss.

Tuesday November 16, 2021, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. MT

About the Event: The universal experience of grief is not talked about nearly enough, and we want to change that. We will spend some time walking with you through both the science that lies underneath grief, why it tends to be so hard, and just how to brave those waves in even the darkest days. Finally, we will land in a word often not paired with grief: joy, and just why finding joy again is often where meaning lives and healing happens.

Over the past 15 years, Dr. Jody Carrington has assessed, treated, educated and empowered some of our most vulnerable and precious souls on the planet. She is a child psychologist by trade, but Jody rarely treats kids. The answer lies, she believes, in the people who hold them. Especially when kids have experienced trauma, that’s when they need big people the most. Some of her favourites include educators, parents, first responders, and foster parents. Jody has shifted the way they think and feel about the holy work that they do.

Before Jody started her own practice and speaking across the country, she worked at the Alberta Children’s Hospital on the inpatient and day treatment units where she held families with some of the difficult stories. They taught her the most important lesson: we are wired to do hard things. We can handle those hard things so much easier when we remember this: we are wired for connection.

This all started when Jody received her Bachelor of Arts with Distinction from the University of Alberta. She completed a year-long internship with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police during that time, and worked along side families struggling with chronic illness at the Ronald McDonald House. She received her Master’s degree in Psychology at the University of Regina and completed her PhD there as well, before completing her residency in Nova Scotia.

Her first book, Kids These Days: A Game Plan for (Re)Connecting with those we Teach, Lead & Love, came out in 2019 and sold 20,000 copies in just three months. It is now on Amazon’s Best Sellers List.

Jessica Janzen is a motivational speaker, published author and a ‘serial-perneur’. She and her husband, Hot Ronnie, are the founders of the Love for Lewiston Foundation. After losing their son Lewiston almost five years ago she decided that she would stop wasting time and get moving on her big dreams and following the nudges of her heart. Her clothing line – The Lewiston Label highlights the life lessons Lewiston taught her. The foundation is impacting lives across Canada and supporting critical research and medical needs for families fighting Spinal Muscular Atrophy and AB Children’s Hospital Foundation. To date in just four years they have raised over $1.1 million dollars. She loves spending time with family, soaking up sunshine, being by water – and dreaming really big always with the daily focus to run towards the roar with joy.
